Leylah Fernandez looks to hard courts for a reset

Leylah Fernandez says injuries and a run of losses have made this season a difficult one, but she believes the move to hard courts could help her regain momentum. The world No. 25, who has won all five of her WTA singles titles on hard courts, said she feels physically and mentally refreshed after taking a short break following Wimbledon. She is set to play the National Bank Open in Toronto from Aug. 1 to 13, after first heading to Washington to defend her title at a WTA 500 event. Fernandez said she has leaned on her team, including her father and coach Jorge Fernandez, to stay focused on the process rather than the results. She also reflected on the pressure of expectations after her run to the 2021 U.S. Open final, saying she is still chasing a place in the WTA top 10 and her first Grand Slam title.
