Former Trump national security adviser John Bolton pleaded guilty in federal court in Maryland to one count of retaining national defense information.
Prosecutors said Bolton kept sensitive material after leaving office and used some of it while preparing a book about his time in the Trump administration. The Justice Department said the material included highly classified information, and officials said Bolton had sent information through personal accounts to people not authorized to see it.
Bolton faces sentencing on Oct. 28 and could receive up to five years in prison. He also agreed to pay a $2.25 million fine, and prosecutors said the remaining charges in the case will be dismissed at sentencing.
