Takao Tanabe’s 100th birthday marked with retrospective in Whistler
Takao Tanabe 100: Inside Passage marks a major retrospective of landscape paintings See seven decades of West Coast and prairie works before the show closes Oct. 19
A new exhibition at the Audain Art Museum in Whistler is celebrating the 100th birthday of Canadian artist Takao Tanabe. The retrospective, titled Takao Tanabe 100: Inside Passage, brings together paintings from across his sevendecade career and focuses on his landscape work.
Tanabe, who was born in Prince Rupert, B.C., has long been known for scenes shaped by the Canadian West Coast, the prairies and other natural settings. Curators said the show was designed to span his artistic development from the 1950s through the 2010s, while also highlighting the range of styles he explored over time.
The exhibition opened while Tanabe was still able to attend with his wife, Anona Thorne. Museum staff said he appeared happy and engaged as he viewed the works. The museum also plans to distribute 100 copies of the exhibition book to libraries and galleries across Canada in recognition of his legacy. The show runs until October 19.
