Toronto women’s sports teams see rising fan support
Toronto women’s sports momentum grows as AFC Toronto, Tempo and Sceptres shine See how sellouts, milestones and city support are building a stronger fan base
Toronto’s women’s sports scene is drawing strong attention as several teams hit major milestones within days of one another. AFC Toronto is preparing for its first home opener, the Toronto Tempo played its first game, and the Toronto Sceptres recently missed the playoffs.
The Tempo’s inaugural preseason game at CocaCola Coliseum drew a sellout crowd, while AFC Toronto’s flag was raised outside city hall ahead of its home match. Team leaders say the growing interest reflects a shared effort among the city’s women’s professional teams to support one another and build a lasting fan base.
Sports and marketing experts say the momentum could help expand opportunities in the city, from better infrastructure and programming to more visibility for women working in sport. City officials have also taken steps to increase recognition for women’s teams at venues such as CocaCola Coliseum and BMO Field, alongside plans for a new Tempo practice facility at Exhibition Place.
