Zoox recalls 105 robotaxis after smoke detection issue

Amazonowned Zoox has recalled software in 105 robotaxis after one of its driverless vehicles entered a smokefilled emergency scene in Las Vegas. The company said the issue involved the vehicles failing to detect heavy smoke and responding improperly. According to Zoox, the incident happened on June 20 when an unoccupied robotaxi approached an active fire scene that was not fully blocked off. The vehicle drove into the area, braked hard, and then stopped. A teleguidance employee instructed it to reverse, and first responders later placed cones around the scene. No injuries were reported. Zoox notified the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration of the voluntary recall on July 8 and said the event was the only known case of this type. The move comes as U.S. safety regulators urge autonomous vehicle developers to improve how their systems respond to first responders, smoke, fire, and other emergency conditions.
