Vancouver airport talks on private investment are already underway

Vancouver airport private investment plan could reshape YVR operations and service See what Ottawa’s proposal could mean for fees, jobs, and long-term airport value

Prime Minister Mark Carney is promoting a plan that would bring private investors into the operation of Vancouver International Airport and three other major Canadian airports. YVR has been run by the Vancouver Airport Authority, a notforprofit organization, since 1992. Airport CEO Tamara Vrooman said discussions with Ottawa have been going on for months and said the airport is open to exploring how private investment could support passengers, workers, the community and longterm value. B.C. Premier David Eby said any arrangement should protect service at YVR and could be acceptable if it also helps smaller airports in the province. Labour leaders warned that investor pressure could affect jobs and fees, while former Air Canada executive Duncan Dee said private ownership models can improve efficiency. Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre said any deal should benefit Canadians rather than insiders.
