Pemberton wildfire evacuation alert rescinded as fire is held

The Village of Pemberton, B.C., has rescinded an evacuation alert after the nearby Signal Hill wildfire was classified as held. Officials said the change means the fire is expected to stay within its current perimeter and no longer poses the same immediate threat to residents.
The wildfire, first discovered on July 15, is now just under one square kilometre in size. While the alert for parts of the village has been lifted, an evacuation order remains in place for One Mile Lake Park, south of the community, to support firefighting operations. The SquamishLillooet Regional District also lifted an alert for properties outside the village.
Fire crews have benefited from cooler temperatures, higher humidity and lighter winds, but provincial officials warned that dry, warm conditions are expected to keep wildfire risk elevated across parts of British Columbia. More than 100 active fires were reported in the province on Sunday, and Environment Canada warned that smoke will continue to affect air quality in several regions.
