Extreme heat and flooding disrupt Canada Day plans across Canada
Canada Day plans shift as heat, flooding and storms disrupt events across Canada See which cities canceled celebrations and how communities are staying safe outdoors
Communities across Canada are adjusting Canada Day plans as extreme heat, flooding, and storm risks affect outdoor events and fireworks.
Environment and Climate Change Canada has issued heat warnings for parts of southwestern Ontario and much of eastern Canada, with temperatures in some areas expected to reach 37 C and humidex values climbing into the 40s. Toronto says its celebrations will continue, but the city has opened cooling spaces and added mobile water trailers to help people stay safe.
Other municipalities are canceling or changing events because of wildfire danger, heavy rain, and flooding. Some fireworks displays north of Toronto have been called off, while the PierrefondsRoxboro borough of Montreal cancelled its Canada Day parade after severe flooding in June. Neepawa, Manitoba, also postponed celebrations after a storm caused power outages and damage, and officials in several other provinces are monitoring weather conditions closely.
