B.C. police warn of outlaw motorcycle gang presence in Nelson

Nelson police are warning residents to expect more than 50 members of outlaw motorcycle clubs and chapters in the city and along nearby highways from Friday to Sunday. Officers say they will maintain a visible presence and are coordinating with other law enforcement and intelligence agencies. Sgt. Sarbjit Sangha of B.C.'s Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit said these gatherings are not the same as ordinary motorcycle rides and can involve criminal activity such as dangerous driving, drug possession, drug trafficking and firearms offences. She added that the presence of gang members does not automatically mean the public is in immediate danger. Criminology professor MartaMarika Urbanik said the public warning suggests police have intelligence about the gathering and want to prepare for possible safety issues. Nelson police are asking people to report suspicious activity to the department’s complaint line or call 911 for emergencies.
