Cross-party Canadian group urges limits on superintelligent AI

A crossparty group of Canadian MPs and senators is backing a campaign that wants Canada to work toward an international agreement to stop the development of artificial intelligence that could surpass human intelligence. The announcement comes just before the federal government is expected to release its national AI strategy. The campaign is led by Control AI, a nonprofit focused on reducing the risks it says superintelligent AI could pose, including extreme security and safety concerns. Supporters include Liberal, Conservative, Bloc Québécois and Independent parliamentarians, along with several senators. The group argues that Canada should treat the issue as a national security priority, while the federal strategy is expected to emphasize partnerships, global alliances and AI adoption.
