Toronto Appoints New Medical Officer of Health
Toronto appoints Dr. Michelle Murti as new medical officer of health. Her experience in pandemic response will enhance health services and equity.
Toronto has officially appointed Dr. Michelle Murti as its new medical officer of health, following the approval of city council. Dr. Murti is set to begin her role on September 3, contingent upon receiving approval from the province's Ministry of Health.
Currently, Dr. Murti serves as the associate chief medical officer of health for Ontario, where she has played a key role in pandemic preparedness and response efforts, as well as health system transformation. She holds a medical degree and a Master's in public health, and is recognized as a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in public health and preventive medicine.
In her new role, Dr. Murti expressed her honor and eagerness to work with the Toronto Public Health staff, community partners, and city officials to enhance health services and address health inequities in the city. Mayor Olivia Chow endorsed Dr. Murti's appointment, expressing confidence in her ability to lead Toronto Public Health.
Dr. NaKoshie Lamptey will remain as the acting medical officer of health until Dr. Murti officially starts her position. The city looks forward to the contributions Dr. Murti will bring to public health initiatives in Toronto.
