Dozens still stranded in L’Ascension, Que., after heavy rain

Dozens of people remain stranded in and around L’Ascension, Que., after torrential rain washed out roads in the Laurentians region, according to Mayor Jacques Allard. Allard said Wednesday that provincial officials initially believed as many as 150 people could be isolated, though Quebec Public Security later said 38 people remained cut off. Crews have restored road access across most of the municipality, but four homes are still unreachable and a remote area north of the village remains a major concern. An emergency meeting was held Wednesday morning with the Sûreté du Québec, the province’s domestic security minister, and civil security officials coordinating efforts to reach people still stranded. Officials said limited cell service has made it difficult to assess the full extent of the damage, and restoring the secondary road network could take months.
