Prime Minister Mark Carney is expected to announce a national food security strategy in Toronto on Thursday, with the government aiming to address the drivers behind higher grocery prices and improve access to affordable food.
The plan is expected to build on earlier affordability measures by supporting domestic food production, boosting competition in grocery retail, and increasing funding for independent supply chains and the Competition Bureau.
Officials say the strategy will also focus on longterm risks to food supply, including climaterelated disruptions, supply chain pressures, and challenges facing remote and Arctic communities. The government is also looking to strengthen the resilience of Canadian farmers, processors, and shippers while continuing to expand food exports abroad.
