President Donald Trump signed a $70 billion Republicanled homeland security package on Wednesday after the measure narrowly cleared the House. The bill provides funding for the Department of Homeland Security, including Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Customs and Border Protection, through the end of Trump’s term.
Trump said the legislation would support law enforcement work, border enforcement, and efforts to combat child exploitation. He also criticized Democrats for opposing the package and argued that the funding was needed to maintain order and security.
The bill faced resistance from some conservatives who wanted stronger legal codification of Trump’s immigration actions, while all Senate Democrats and Republican Sen. Lisa Murkowski voted against it. Supporters said the measure was necessary to keep DHS operations funded amid security concerns.
