An Americanowned company plans to close and relocate its Chilliwack, B.C., transformer plant, prompting concern from the provincial government over jobs and supply stability.
Central Moloney Inc., based in Arkansas, said it is consolidating its Canadian operations, a move that would eliminate 43 jobs in B.C. by the end of August. The plant, Cam Tran, makes and repairs transformers and counts BC Hydro among its major customers.
B.C. Energy Minister Adrian Dix said the province is weighing its options ahead of a meeting next week between company representatives and BC Hydro’s CEO. He said officials want to protect access to transformers, which are important to the power system, while also addressing the impact on workers. The company said it will continue operating five other facilities in Canada.
