Canada adds $5.4 billion to support child care program
Canada child care funding gets $5.4B boost to help stabilize $10-a-day care Support fees, wages, and new spaces as provinces push for more details
The federal government will provide provinces and territories with an additional $5.4 billion over two years for Canada’s $10aday child care program. Jobs and Families Minister Patty Hajdu said the funding is meant to help stabilize the system as provinces face rising costs, staffing challenges and continued demand.
The program, launched in 2021, aimed to lower child care fees and create more spaces across the country. While many jurisdictions have reduced fees, some have not yet reached the $10aday target, and several provinces say they still need more funding to keep the program viable.
Ontario and Alberta both said they are waiting for more details on how the money will be allocated. Child care advocates welcomed the extra funding but said it does not fully solve longterm sustainability concerns, especially as wait lists remain high and new space creation has lagged behind original goals.
