Trump says China spies on U.S. after report on Iran strike imagery
China spies on us, Trump says as tensions rise over Iran attack report See how U.S.-China intelligence claims and the Jordan strike could shape talks
President Donald Trump said on Sunday that China "spies on us" while responding to a report that Chinese entities allegedly provided Iran with satellite imagery before a July missile attack that killed three U.S. troops.
Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One, Trump said the two countries both gather intelligence on each other and suggested that U.S.China behavior is part of a broader pattern of mutual surveillance. He also said Chinese President Xi Jinping has acted "reasonably well" ahead of Xi's planned visit to Washington later this month.
The Wall Street Journal reported that U.S. officials linked the imagery to Iran's July 17 strike on Muwaffaq Salti Air Base in Jordan. Officials reportedly said the case was the clearest sign yet that support from Chinese entities for Iran during the conflict may have had deadly consequences, although they did not name the entities involved or accuse Beijing of directly carrying out the attack.
