Ford urges stronger Canadian response to Trump tariff threat

Ontario Premier Doug Ford is calling on Prime Minister Mark Carney and other provincial premiers to speak more forcefully in response to U.S. President Donald Trump’s latest tariff threat. Speaking after a summer meeting of the Council of the Federation in Charlottetown, Ford said Canada needs a Team Canada approach led by the prime minister. He said he supports Carney but feels Ottawa and some premiers should be more outspoken as the U.S. prepares to impose 50 per cent tariffs on dozens of Canadian goods. Ford also repeated his view that Canada should keep all options open, including possible limits on energy exports to the United States. Other premiers, including those in Alberta, Saskatchewan and Quebec, were more cautious or rejected that idea. Carney is set to meet the premiers on Thursday as trade talks continue ahead of the expected tariff deadline in August.
