B.C. review board finds man charged in Burnaby RCMP officer’s death unfit for trial
British Columbia review board keeps Jongwon Ham in custody after ruling him unfit for trial in RCMP Const. Shaelyn Yang’s 2022 killing; case returns in one year
A British Columbia review board has found Jongwon Ham unfit to stand trial in connection with the 2022 killing of RCMP Const. Shaelyn Yang in Burnaby, B.C., and ordered that he remain in custody.
The ruling took effect on July 16 and means Ham will stay at the Forensic Psychiatric Hospital in Coquitlam for at least one year, when the case will be reviewed again.
Ham is charged with firstdegree murder in the death of Yang, who was working as an RCMP mental health and outreach worker when she was stabbed in Broadview Park on Oct. 18, 2022. A B.C. Supreme Court judge previously found him unfit to stand trial in April and referred the matter to the review board for assessment.
