Canadian cyclist Derek GeeWest has withdrawn from Sunday’s elite men’s road race at the UCI Road Cycling World Championships in Montreal after suffering a broken rib in a recent crash.
GeeWest, 29, said he had hoped to race at the home event but did not recover quickly enough to compete properly or help the Canadian team. He is still expected to attend the championships as a spectator.
Guillaume Boivin will take his place in the race. On Tuesday, Canada finished ninth in the mixed relay team time trial, while Italy won the event ahead of France and Switzerland. The world championships continue in Montreal through Sunday.
