Household financial worries reach highest level since 2022, New York Fed survey says

New York Fed survey shows U.S. households growing more worried about finances See what rising stress, energy prices, and inflation outlook mean for consumers

A New York Fed survey found that U.S. households became more concerned about their finances in May, with the share saying their situation was much worse than a year earlier rising to its highest level since July 2022. The Fed’s monthly Survey of Consumer Expectations also showed that the broader view of current conditions weakened, even though inflation expectations changed little overall. Consumers’ oneyear inflation outlook edged down to 3.5%, while longerterm expectations stayed at 3.1% and 3%. The report comes as households weigh higher energy prices tied to the Iran war and look ahead to the next Consumer Price Index release and the Federal Reserve’s June 17 policy meeting.
