Quebec adds exam requirement for some Ontario truck drivers

Quebec is introducing new rules for newer Ontario truck drivers after several serious collisions involving heavy vehicles raised safety concerns. Drivers with less than two years of experience will need to pass practical exams to work in Quebec, or they may need to exchange their Ontario licence for a Class 1 heavy vehicle licence. The move comes after Ontario’s auditor general reported problems with truck driver training oversight, including colleges that did not provide required instruction. Industry representatives said they understand Quebec’s concerns and called for stronger enforcement and more consistent standards. Ontario says it is reviewing training providers and working to address the issues identified in the audit. Quebec says the new measures are temporary while it watches how Ontario responds and whether road safety improves.
