Vancouver beach lifeguards stay on duty at nine outdoor beaches this summer See which beaches are covered and what the funding shift means for swimmers
The Vancouver Park Board has voted to keep lifeguards at nine outdoor beaches this summer after previously planning to scale back the program.
The updated coverage will include Spanish Banks West, Spanish Banks East, Locarno, Jericho, Kitsilano, Sunset, English Bay, Second Beach and Third Beach. Trout Lake will not have lifeguards under the new arrangement.
Park board chair Tom Digby said the decision was made in a tight budget year, but that beach safety remains a priority. The board also said the move was made possible through a onetime reallocation of funds from the 2026 budget, and that longerterm funding would need to be settled in the 2027 budget.
