Vancouver man charged with manslaughter after fatal stabbing

A Vancouver man has been charged with manslaughter in connection with the death of 54yearold Michael Smadu, police said. The charge follows a stabbing on Sept. 3, 2025, near East 6th Avenue and Fraser Street, where Smadu was found injured at a home and later died despite efforts by first responders. The accused, David Richard Morin, 32, has a history of violent offending in British Columbia. In 2022, he pleaded guilty after randomly stabbing a tourist inside a downtown Vancouver Tim Hortons and received a threeyear sentence for aggravated assault. Police had previously warned the public about Morin when he was released from prison in 2024, citing concerns about his risk to the community. He is expected to appear in court on July 3 and will remain in custody on the manslaughter charge.
