Oil tanker traffic in the Strait of Hormuz increased after the U.S. and Iran agreed to reopen the sea lane to commercial shipping, according to trade intelligence firm Kpler.
Kpler said at least 20 tankers crossed the strait on Thursday, the highest level since June 2, though traffic remained below prewar levels. In total, 25 vessels of various types transited the waterway that day.
The report said Iranian supertankers have begun turning on transponders again as they leave the region, suggesting shipping activity is moving closer to normal patterns. Most of the ships used the route designated by Iran, while talks are expected later on how the strait will be administered after a 60day tollfree period ends.
