Trump administration returns mail ballot dispute to Supreme Court
Postal Service ballot rules face Supreme Court review as states prep midterm mail voting States warn the changes could disrupt election mail—see what happens next
The Trump administration on Sunday asked the Supreme Court to block a lowercourt order that stopped new U.S. Postal Service requirements for mailin election ballots. The filing comes as states begin preparing ballots for the November midterm elections.
Solicitor General John Sauer argued that keeping the injunction in place could create confusion as more states start mailing ballots in the coming days and weeks. He said the Postal Service rule is meant to improve handling of election mail and does not decide who may vote or how ballots are counted.
The challenged requirements would require mailed federal election ballots to use official Election Mail envelopes, meet automation standards, include unique barcodes, and be reviewed by the Postal Service. Democraticled states and voting rights groups say the changes are unconstitutional and too difficult to implement before November, while election officials say they need more time to adjust their systems.
