Intel foundry wins Fortinet as first named customer under Lip-Bu Tan

Fortinet said it will use Intel’s foundry services to make its nextgeneration security chip, giving Intel its first publicly named customer since LipBu Tan became CEO in March 2025. The chip, called SP6, will be built on Intel 4, a process the company says is suited to simpler chips such as networking ASICs. Intel is still looking for a larger customer for its most advanced manufacturing nodes, including 18A and 14A, which are central to its longterm foundry strategy. The announcement is a notable step for Intel as it tries to expand its contract manufacturing business and show that outside customers are willing to use its factories at scale. It also comes as Fortinet continues to invest in its ASIC technology amid growing demand for cybersecurity hardware tied to AI adoption. Intel is due to report quarterly results on Thursday. Analysts and investors will likely look for more detail on customer traction and the company’s foundry roadmap.
