Student loan servicers start 90-day exit notices for SAVE borrowers
SAVE repayment plan borrowers must switch after federal court orders the program ended Review repayment options now to protect your monthly bill before the 90-day deadline
Student loan servicers have started notifying borrowers enrolled in the SAVE repayment plan that they must move to another federal repayment option. The notices come after a federal appeals court ordered the end of the Bidenera program.
The U.S. Department of Education said the earliest exit deadline is Sept. 29, but many borrowers will be contacted in waves through March 2027. Once a borrower receives notice, they have 90 days to choose a new plan.
If borrowers do not act, they may be moved into the Standard Repayment Plan or the new Tiered Standard Plan, which began on July 1. Federal officials and consumer advocates say borrowers should review their choices now, since repayment options and monthly bills can vary based on income, family size and loan balance.
