U.S. says India trade deal is not imminent after Modi-Trump call

India trade talks stay open as U.S. and New Delhi test key sticking points See what’s blocking a deal on tariffs, oil, and market access right now

U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said negotiations with India are still underway, but a trade agreement is not close to being finalized. His comments came a day after President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke by phone and described the call as productive. Greer said the two sides have identified the main sticking points, including India’s purchases of Russian oil and U.S. concerns about that trade. Indian Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal has been in the United States for talks and for the G20 trade ministers meeting in Milwaukee. The talks come as both countries continue to push for a deal that would improve market access and tariff terms. India wants more favorable duties for its exports, while the U.S. has kept pressure on New Delhi over its energy ties with Moscow and the wider trade balance.
