Montreal West parents call crossing guard return a temporary win

Montreal West crossing guard returns near Royal West Academy for safer school Parents push for a permanent fix as road changes and safety measures move ahead

Parents and students in Montreal West are welcoming the return of a crossing guard at a busy intersection near Royal West Academy, but they say the measure is only a stopgap. The guard was brought back to the corner of Ainslie Road and Westminster Avenue after a summer campaign by parents who had pushed for better safety after the guard's previous assignment ended in June. The intersection has been a concern for years, and three students have been hit and injured there in the past two years. Officials say the guard is back twice a day for now, alongside a pilot project to narrow the roadway and limit left turns. Roadwork is expected to begin on Sept. 22 and finish by the end of October, but parents want a permanent crossing guard to stay in place after the changes are completed.
