Toronto man charged after SUV stolen in towing scheme

A 35yearold Toronto man is facing stolen vehicle and drug charges after police say an SUV that had been towed to a fake repair business was later reported stolen and seen driving dangerously in Pickering, Ontario. Durham Regional Police said they responded on July 22 to an assist call involving a stolen vehicle around 4:30 p.m. At the same time, officers received reports that a white Genesis SUV was travelling at high speed and in a dangerous manner. Police found the SUV parked near Liverpool Road and Kingston Road. The driver was arrested without incident, and officers say they found cocaine during a search. Investigators later learned the vehicle had been towed to a business called "AutoFix" by "East Side Towing," but the repair shop did not exist. The vehicle owner then reported it stolen. The man has been charged with dangerous operation, possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000, obstruction of a peace officer, possession of cocaine, driving with an open container of liquor, and driving while suspended. Police say the allegations have not been proven in court, and the suspect remains in custody for a bail hearing.
