Air Canada refunds grieving mother after months-long dispute
Air Canada refund delays: Nova Scotia mother waited months after a child’s death See how the airline fixed the error and why grieving travelers face service gaps
A Nova Scotia mother says Air Canada failed to promptly refund her share of a cancelled trip after the death of her 10yearold daughter, leaving her to follow up for months while grieving.
Becky CableMunroe had booked a trip to Toronto for her daughter Lucy to see Sabrina Carpenter perform, but Lucy died in a boating accident before the travel date. After a friend submitted documents and cancelled the booking, CableMunroe says the airline refunded only the child’s ticket at first and did not respond clearly about the remaining amount.
Air Canada later told CBC’s Go Public that the refund should have been issued under its bereavement policy and said the policy was not applied correctly in this case. The airline said it has since refunded CableMunroe and apologized, while experts said the case shows how automated complaint systems and unclear processes can be difficult for grieving customers to navigate.
