B.C. councillor criticizes George Massey Tunnel replacement project

A Delta city councillor is calling the George Massey Tunnel replacement in British Columbia one of the province’s biggest transportation boondoggles after the government dropped its current contractor. The province said Monday it could not agree on commercial terms with Cross Fraser Partnership, even though construction had already started in January. The project will now be broken into separate components, and local companies will be invited to bid on them. Transportation Minister Mike Farnworth said the change should help reduce costs. Farnworth said the tunnel replacement is still expected to open in 2030. But councillor Dylan Kruger said the decision raises concerns about project management and called for an independent thirdparty investigation, a motion that passed unanimously at council. The province said the timeline remains unchanged, with environmental review work expected to finish by the end of this year and major construction to begin next year.
