Brandon McNulty wins the men’s elite road race at Worlds in Montreal First U.S. title since 1993, with late attacks and podium drama driving clicks

Brandon McNulty won the men's elite road race at the UCI Road World Championships in Montreal, becoming the first American to take the title since Lance Armstrong in 1993. The 28yearold attacked with 33 kilometres left and stayed ahead to finish in 6:17:04. Australia’s Michael Matthews took silver and the Netherlands’ Mathieu van der Poel earned bronze. McNulty said he did not fully believe he had won until the final stretch. Canada’s top finisher was Michael Leonard in 32nd place, while Michael Woods finished 35th in what he said was his final race. Several other Canadian riders did not finish the 273.4kilometre course.
