The Trump administration has introduced a new global tariff system to replace a temporary 10% levy that was set to expire. The change affects goods from Canada, the European Union, and nearly 60 other countries.
U.S. officials say the tariffs are meant to address concerns about forced labour in supply chains. The new rates are 10% for Canada and 15 other trading partners, and 12.5% for 44 others. Goods that meet the rules of origin under the CanadaU.S.Mexico Agreement are exempt.
Canadian officials said the country already has strong safeguards against forced labour and disputed the U.S. claim. The new policy follows earlier court setbacks for the Trump administration’s broader tariff plans, which led it to look for a different legal basis for the duties.
