U.S. strikes Iranian targets after tanker attack in Strait of Hormuz

The U.S. military launched strikes on Iranian targets after a commercial tanker was hit in the Strait of Hormuz, according to U.S. Central Command. The incident took place on Saturday amid rising tensions between the U.S. and Iran. Central Command said the strikes targeted military surveillance infrastructure, communication systems, air defense sites, drone storage facilities, and minelayer capabilities. It said the action was carried out in response to an earlier drone attack on the Panamaflagged tanker M/T Kiku, which was carrying more than two million barrels of crude oil. The report says the latest exchange comes as the two countries are supposed to be observing a 60day ceasefire while negotiations continue. Bahrain also accused Iran of a drone strike that it called a violation of its sovereignty. Despite the attacks, Central Command said commercial shipping through the waterway continued.
