The federal government says it will not back Ontario's plan to expand Billy Bishop Airport in Toronto so jets can use the waterfront facility. The decision follows a public consultation that drew more than 87,000 responses, with most participants opposing the project.
Transport Minister Steven MacKinnon said Ottawa will focus on approved safety improvements at the airport instead of pursuing changes that could affect public spaces, noise levels, the environment, or housing plans nearby. Officials said the consultation also raised concerns about transportation, economics, quality of life, and environmental protection.
Ontario still says it wants to move ahead with the airport expansion, which it says could strengthen connectivity and support economic growth. Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow welcomed the federal decision, while community and business groups reacted with sharply different views on the future of the airport.
