The first group of beluga whales from Marineland in Niagara Falls, Ont., began moving on Monday to aquariums in the United States. Six whales are part of the initial transfer, which could eventually involve up to 30 remaining animals over the coming weeks.
The move follows months of uncertainty over the whales’ future after Marineland’s request to send them to China was rejected by the federal government last year. Marineland closed to the public in 2024, and concerns had grown about the park’s ability to continue caring for the animals.
According to the report, Canadian veterinarians still needed to clear each whale for travel, and export permits from the federal government were also required. The U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration previously authorized an emergency rescue for several whales, allowing the transfer plan to proceed.
