Quebec obstetricians and gynecologists have launched a legal challenge against the province’s medical specialists federation over what they describe as a persistent genderbased pay gap.
The association representing the specialists filed a review Thursday in Quebec Superior Court, arguing that specialties with a majority of women continue to be paid less than those with a majority of men.
According to the association, medical specialists in femalemajority fields earned an average of 30% less than those in malemajority fields in 2020, even as overall compensation for specialists has risen.
The group is asking the court to recognize the pay disparity and order the federation to end it. The federation says obstetricians and gynecologists are the specialty with the highest proportion of women in Quebec.
