Toronto tower plan raises concerns over shadows near St. James Cathedral
Toronto condo tower near St. James Cathedral sparks heritage shadow concerns See why critics say the 91-storey proposal could reshape the historic downtown
Heritage advocates in Toronto are objecting to a proposed 91storey condo tower next to St. James Cathedral, saying the project could add more shadow to the city’s oldest church and affect its historic character.
The developer’s study says the impact would be limited because nearby towers already cast shadows on the site. But critics argue the analysis only covers part of the day and does not fully account for how the shadow could grow later in the evening during the summer months.
The project, planned for 23 Toronto St., has not yet completed rezoning or public consultation. If approved, it would add 840 residential units along with office and retail space in the downtown area.
