Most Ontario high school grads did not complete e-learning requirement, data shows

New data from Ontario’s Ministry of Education suggests that most members of the province’s 202324 graduating class did not finish the mandatory elearning credits required for a high school diploma. The cohort was the first to be affected by Ontario’s rule that students take two online courses to graduate. According to the data, more than 104,000 students opted out or were exempt, while just over 46,000 completed the requirement. The figures have renewed debate at Queen’s Park about whether the mandate should remain in place. Critics say the results show weak demand for compulsory online learning, while the education minister says online courses still give students access to classes they may not otherwise be able to take, especially in some northern communities. A motion now before the legislature would end the mandatory elearning credits and make online learning optional again.
