OpenAI backs California bill on youth AI safety

OpenAI backs California SB 1119 for youth AI safety and teen protections See how age checks, audits, and parental controls could shape safer AI use

OpenAI said it supports California Senate Bill 1119, a proposal aimed at adding safeguards for how young people use AI while keeping access to tools for learning and creativity. The company said the bill could help set a strong standard for youth AI safety at a time when there is no federal action. In a letter to Governor Gavin Newsom, OpenAI praised state lawmakers for advancing the measure and encouraged him to sign it. The company said the bill aligns with its existing youthsafety efforts, including age prediction, parental controls, and teenfocused product policies. OpenAI said the law would require age checks, risk reviews, independent audits, protections against harmful content, parental oversight tools, crisissupport resources, limits on targeted ads, and stronger privacy protections for users ages 13 to 17. It also said its new ChatGPT for Teens experience is designed to provide automatic safeguards and support ageappropriate learning.
