Carney says Gordie Howe bridge opening may be delayed

Prime Minister Mark Carney said the Gordie Howe International Bridge between Windsor, Ontario, and Detroit may not open by the end of the week, but he downplayed the issue and said there was no major concern. Carney said officials are still working to open the border crossing as soon as possible. He noted that a short delay would not change the bridge’s longterm value for commuters, tourists, businesses, and trade between Canada and the United States. The comments came after Carney had previously suggested the bridge would open by Friday, while the White House said no final timeline had been set and repeated President Donald Trump’s opposition to the opening. The bridge was built with Canadian funding and is expected to collect tolls until construction costs are recovered, after which Michigan will receive part of the net revenue.
