Ontario man charged in Nova Scotia investment scam case
Ontario man charged in Nova Scotia fraud probe after alleged investment scam RCMP say victims lost $65,000 as investigators urge Canadians to report scams
An Ontario man has been charged with fraud in Nova Scotia after an RCMP investigation into an alleged online investment scam that affected victims across Canada.
Police say the case began with a complaint from a person in Hebbville, Nova Scotia, in October 2023. The victim reportedly invested more than $65,000 with what they believed was a legitimate U.K.based company and was told the money would be used to buy Government of Canada savings bonds.
According to RCMP, the promised interest payments never arrived, and the operation started to fall apart when the victim tried to contact the company. The complaints were later forwarded to the RCMP’s federal market enforcement team in Calgary because of the number of reports and jurisdictions involved.
A 65yearold man from Palgrave, Ontario, is scheduled to appear in Bridgewater Provincial Court on June 17. RCMP say fraud cases like this can be difficult to investigate because they often cross provincial boundaries, and they are urging anyone who suspects a scam to contact police, the Canadian AntiFraud Centre, or Crime Stoppers.
