Uber uses OpenAI to improve driver tools and booking
Uber AI assistant brings real-time guidance for drivers and faster ride booking OpenAI-powered voice tools cut taps, boost accessibility, and speed decisions
Uber is working with OpenAI to add AI assistants and voice features to its app, aiming to help drivers make better decisions and make ride booking easier for riders.
In a May 6, 2026 post, OpenAI said Uber is using its models to process realtime marketplace signals such as traffic, weather, airport activity, and demand across Uber’s global network. The company says the tools are designed to reduce friction for users and support faster decisionmaking inside the app.
For drivers, Uber Assistant summarizes marketplace data and offers plainlanguage guidance on where to position, when to switch between rides and deliveries, and how to interpret earnings patterns. Uber said the system is built with safety, trust, and low latency in mind, and uses a multiagent setup plus an internal governance layer to help screen prompts and responses.
Uber is also expanding voicebased booking features using OpenAI’s Realtime API. Riders can speak naturallanguage requests in the app, and the system can suggest trip options based on context and saved locations. Uber said the new voice experience is intended to improve accessibility and reduce the number of taps needed to complete a trip request.
