Germany proposes 25% crypto tax from 2028

Germany crypto tax proposal: 25% flat tax on trading profits from 2028 Could end 12-month tax-free gains for newer buys and change investor strategy

Germany’s finance ministry is reportedly planning a 25% flat tax on cryptocurrency trading profits starting in 2028. The draft proposal would apply to digital assets bought after Jan. 1, 2027, while assets purchased earlier may keep the current rules. Under existing law, crypto gains in Germany can become taxfree after a holding period of more than 12 months. The proposed change would remove that longterm tax advantage for newer purchases and align crypto profits with the country’s standard flatrate tax treatment. Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil previously said the government expects the overhaul to raise about 2 billion euros, or roughly $2.3 billion, in additional revenue. The ministry has not yet publicly confirmed full details of the draft.
