Vancouver residents push back against traffic calming barriers in Hastings-Sunrise
Vancouver traffic calming barriers spark Hastings-Sunrise access concerns See why residents oppose the changes and what the city plans next
Some residents and business owners in Vancouver's HastingsSunrise neighbourhood are opposing new traffic calming barriers, saying the changes make it harder to drive in and out of the area.
Local resident Tom Siracusa says the streets now feel blocked off, and a petition started by the group Remove the Barriers has gathered more than 2,100 signatures. Opponents argue the road closures are pushing traffic into laneways and creating access problems for seniors, homeowners, and emergency vehicles.
The City of Vancouver says the barriers are part of its expanded HastingsSunrise Traffic Calming Project, designed after public consultation to address speeding and shortcutting. City staff say they are monitoring the impact and will review traffic data later in 2026 before making any further adjustments in 2027.
