Three provinces send firefighters to help Quebec battle wildfires

New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and British Columbia are sending firefighters to Quebec as the province faces a surge in wildfires, mostly in its northern regions.
Quebec’s wildfire agency, SOPFEU, said 63 firefighters from British Columbia were set to arrive on July 3, followed by 21 from New Brunswick and 17 from Prince Edward Island on July 4. The additional crews will support 640 Quebec firefighters and auxiliary personnel already working on the ground.
As of Friday afternoon, SOPFEU reported 186 active wildfires in northern Quebec and 14 more in the protection zone. The agency said some of the fires are burning deep underground, making them harder and slower to put out.
