Squamish rescue calls spike after fatal backcountry incident

Squamish Search and Rescue and RCMP responded to five emergency calls in the Squamish area over the weekend, including one incident that left a 31yearold man dead. Four of the calls came within a sevenhour span on Saturday, stretching local rescue resources and prompting mutual aid from North Shore Rescue. Crews were called to Sky Pilot, Tricouni Peak, the Howe Sound Crest Trail, and a canyon east of Britannia Beach, where the fatal waterfallsystem incident occurred. On Sunday, responders also assisted an injured hiker in the Shannon Falls pool system. Search managers and safety advocates said the weekend highlights the risks of summer backcountry recreation and urged people to prepare carefully, carry reliable emergency communication devices, and avoid relying only on cellphones. Officials said the region has already seen multiple deaths this year, and the busiest months for hiking and climbing incidents are typically from May through September.
