Etobicoke man sentenced to five years for wife’s death
Toronto manslaughter sentence: Giuseppe Zollerano gets five years in prison Judge cites intimate partner violence, alcohol and drugs in wife’s death case
A Toronto judge has sentenced Giuseppe Zollerano to five years in prison after a manslaughter conviction in the death of his wife, Katherine Zollerano.
Court heard that on Sept. 25, 2022, Zollerano drove a van onto a curb outside the couple’s Etobicoke home and struck his wife after an argument. Katherine Zollerano, who had been in hospital for five weeks after the incident, later died from her injuries.
At sentencing, the Crown argued the act was a deliberate assault and sought a 10year term, while the defence said the offence should be treated as dangerous driving and asked for a lighter sentence because of Zollerano’s mental health issues and other mitigating factors. The judge agreed the unlawful act was dangerous driving, but said the case involved intimate partner violence and aggravating conduct, including the use of alcohol and a prescribed drug. After credit for time already served, Zollerano has four years and five months left to serve.
